Addressing The Imbalance
For quite a few years, free-thinking therapists have found themselves ostracized, harassed, or even “canceled” by activists, clients, and even other therapists pushing rigid ideological frameworks such as DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and CRT (Critical Race Theory). Their often dogmatic application within therapy education training and practice has created a chilling effect for many professionals. Counselors who question or critique these ideologies, or who simply wish to maintain a neutral, client-first approach, have been silenced or subjected to public backlash. There are infinite examples of this, unfortunately.
Despite this, I believe that the majority of therapists in the United States value open dialogue, nuanced thinking, and respect for individual clients without imposing external agendas. We believe therapy should be about helping people through the art and craft of psychotherapy as it was meant to be practiced—not about adhering to an ideology. Yet, finding a supportive community in the current climate has become increasingly difficult for professionals who don’t align with these pushed narratives.

Founding Simply Therapists
Karen King, the founder of SimplyTherapists.org, is a visionary within her field—adopting Ketamine Assisted Therapy for her Integrated Behavioral Health clinic in 2020 and then creating an Ideology-free supervision program at Ideological Oasis in 2023. She has extensive experience helping individuals find clarity and achieve meaningful progress in their lives in many settings: psychiatric inpatient, a PNW Indian tribe, Integrated Behavioral Health in a primary care setting, and in private practice for almost two decades. Over the years, she has observed the importance of therapists who approach their work with care, professionalism, and an unwavering focus on the client’s goals. She has also witnessed the incredible transformation of therapists who suddenly feel supported by a like-minded community—from isolated and despairing to empowered and hopeful.
Inspired by a commitment to provide a practical solution for those seeking unbiased, client-centered therapy, Karen created SimplyTherapists.org to help clients connect with therapists who prioritize honest, effective support without being influenced by ideological trends or external agendas.
Drawing from projects like Ideological Oasis, Critical Therapy Antidote and James Esses' Just-Therapy.org, and Open Therapy Institute which advocate for thoughtful, straightforward approaches to therapy and professional development, Karen believes in maintaining therapy as a space for real progress rooted in respect and understanding.
We have all has witnessed the increasing challenges faced by therapists who hold balanced, client-focused perspectives, particularly in a profession that should welcome a variety of viewpoints. Now we have a place to be, and to advertise ourselves to prospective clients who want Simply Therapy.
